Bayern Munich’s newest midfielder, João Palhinha, is finally getting his chance.
The ex-Fulham destroyer and Portuguese international arrived on a ballyhooed transfer this summer a year after a dramatic deadline deal reversal left him stranded in Munich without completing his move. It’s taken time — and an injury to Bayern’s rising youngster Aleksandar Pavlović — for Palhinha to land as a fixture in Vincent Kompany’s XI.
But he’s here now and has started in each of Bayern’s three successive clean sheets.
Next up: the Champions League, where Bayern face one of Portugal’s biggest clubs.
“It’s not easy to keep a clean sheet three times in a row. We’re proud of that, but we have to keep going,” Palhinha said after Saturday’s win, a 3-0 takedown of Union Berlin (as captured via @iMiaSanMia). “We have a very important game on Wednesday, and that’s what we’re focusing on now. Benfica have developed very well since their change of coach. For me, it’s obviously a special game. We’ll fight, we want to play our game and win.”
