West Ham majority owner David Sullivan and technical director Tim Steidten held an important meeting over the international break.
The future of Julen Lopetegui and potential replacements were reportedly discussed at the high-level West Ham meeting.
But that was not the only important business on the Hammers’ agenda.
With less than six weeks until the January window opens, transfers were a hot topic too.
Fans and the press were excited by West Ham’s dealings in the summer.
Many tipped the Hammers for Europe after a window which saw nine new players arrived for over £155m.
With a new manager and fresh ideas, hopes and expectations were high.
Reality has been very different, though.
Lopetegui has struggled to convince fans or players thus far with West Ham down in 14th place in the Premier League table.
A journalist close to the owners claimed last night Lopetegui has two games to save his job.
With Newcastle and Arsenal up next, that looks ominous.
After such a busy summer, few expected to be heading into the January window with West Ham needing to make more signings.
But that is exactly the scenario the Irons find themselves in.
Remorseful Sullivan sanctions two big West Ham moves
Whether Lopetegui is around for it remains to be seen.
However, technical director Tim Steidten will be getting a second chance if a new claim is accurate.
As the man in charge of the football operation, the German has to take his share of the blame for West Ham’s failings.
Especially as half of the additions he made in the summer rebuild simply haven’t worked out.
Only Max Kilman, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Crysencio Summerville have looked like quality signings.
The jury remains out on Jean-Clair Todibo.
Worst of all the signings, though, has undoubtedly been striker Niclas Fullkrug.
The Hammers simply had to get the striker signing right in the summer.
But Steidten bringing in his 31-year-old, injury-prone compatriot has been a costly mistake.
Fullkrug has barely featured and has spent two months and counting out injured.
There is no timeframe on his return and a report emerged this week from an insider close to David Sullivan that Fullkrug is unsettled in the UK and wants to leave.
Now a remorseful Sullivan has sanctioned two big West Ham moves for as soon as the window opens.
When the summer window closed West Ham’s owners made it clear the club was close to its limit in terms of PSR.
Green light for striker signing and Fullkrug exit
So money may be thin on the ground in January.
West Ham fans will be glad to hear the club realise some of the transfers have not worked and will be trying to do business in the winter window.
According to Give Me Sport sources, Sullivan has agreed to let Fullkrug leave if a suitable bid comes in for the unsettled striker.
Steidten will then be tasked with signing a replacement in a deal that’s either cheap or an initial loan.
Sources told the site that Fullkrug’s prolonged period on the treatment table has forced Sullivan to be open to signing another striker during the fast-approaching January window.
“West Ham’s hierarchy have come to terms with the fact that Fullkrug’s arrival has backfired after a lot of time went into identifying the best forward to recruit during the summer,” the report states.
“It has led to Steidten and Lopetegui exploring their options as they look to improve their attack in January.”
It is claimed West Ham have started to line up potential signings who could be available midway through the season after running out of patience with Fullkrug.
“They are hopeful of finding a prolific marksman who will come in on the cheap or on a temporary basis,” the report adds.
If Fullkrug leaves it will raise money towards any incomings.
But loans with options or obligations to buy look the most likely for the Hammers.
With Michail Antonio and Danny Ings out of contract in the summer, it won’t be the only striker West Ham need to sign in the coming windows either.
