Former Premier League striker Darren Bent believes Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher could be a great signing for Chelsea.
The Blues have made a good start to the season under Enzo Maresca and currently sit third in the Premier League, although there’s just four points separating them and Manchester United in 13th.
Chelsea have looked good going forward but there are still question marks defensively, especially over goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Bent believes Kelleher could be a great signing for Chelsea
Despite a difficult first campaign at the club, Chelsea made the decision to start with Sanchez as their number one this season.
The Blues sent Djordje Petrovic on loan to Strasbourg, and whilst they signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal he’s currently playing second fiddle.
Sanchez has come under fire for his performances this season and has made a number of errors which have cost Chelsea goals.
The Spain international was at fault for both goals against Brighton, conceded a penalty against Manchester United, whilst he should have done better for Curtis Jones’ winner at Anfield and Gabriel Martinell’s goal for Arsenal.
Chelsea have backed Sanchez and believe he can become one of the best goalkeepers in the league, but that hasn’t stopped reports linking them with a new shot stopper.
Earlier this week Chelsea were linked with a £35m move Liverpool’s Kelleher and although that rumour was shut down, Bent believes he could be a great signing for the Blues.
“Kelleher is now a very good goalkeeper,” he told talkSPORT.
“He’s 25, it’s time now, let’s get going now. I think there’s an opportunity there. I’m not convinced on [Robert] Sanchez, if I’m honest.
“He makes some unbelievable saves, but him (Kelleher) going in there at £35m, that’s not even a risk.”
The pressure will continue to build on Sanchez unless his performances improve and the Blues could really do with him going on a run of games where he doesn’t make any mistakes.
At this point it’s unclear what it would take for Sanchez to be dropped, but any more errors and Maresca’s hand could finally be forced.
