Tottenham are likely to get busy in the January transfer market in an attempt to strengthen their first team and hope that their results become more consistent in their pursuit of a Champions League berth.
To that end, it looks like the club are ready to hand new deals to two players Ange Postecoglou has had to rely on a fair bit in recent games.
Tottenham set to extend stays of Timo Werner and Ben Davies
As reported by Football London, Tottenham are likely to sign Timo Werner permanently while extending Ben Davies‘ contract ahead of the January transfer window.
The Germany international is in his second loan spell at the club from RB Leipzig, having impressed Ange Postecoglou in his first half-season loan spell earlier in the year. The Lilywhites could secure the 28-year-old permanently for £8.5 million.
Werner, valued by Transfermarkt at €17 million, has three goals and six assists in 30 appearances for Tottenham.
Davies, on the other hand, is a veteran at Hotspur Way. Currently in his 11th year at the club, the Wales international’s £80k-per-week contract enters the last six months in January, but the club are ready to offer him another year.
The €10m-rated versatile defender has made almost 350 appearances for Tottenham.
Both safe calls
Timo Werner continues lacking that decisive output in the final third of the pitch, while Davies has always remained in that “good, but not great” category of footballers at the top level of the Premier League.
However, given the injuries they are having to deal with, the money for which Tottenham could be able to extend the stays of both Werner and Davies, as well as the fact that for all their limitations these two are industrious, able deputies for the positions for which Tottenham need further reinforcement, tying down the players currently at their disposal, at least for the foreseeable future, is a wise call.
