Countdown to peak bloom in Washington: eight days.
Oh you know spring is truly here when the cherry blossoms arrive in Washington DC. These gifts from Japan line the tidal basin and remain barren for most of the year, and then bloom in a dazzling pink around March/April.
It’s one of the most beautiful sights in Washington.
One of my favourite things, though, are the random cherry blossoms that are dotted around town.
This post is from a couple years ago, but it gives you a good overview of where the cherry blossoms are around DC:
While the ones around the mall account for a gorgeous landscape, they are the most trafficked. Tonnes of tourists arrive here every year and crowd around these beautiful trees which can be a bit overwhelming to navigate.
I have already seen my first cherry blossoms of the year much closer to home. Just across my block, actually, are three lovely pink cherry blossom trees. They’re truly a wonderful sight to see.
However, my favourite place to look at the cherry blossoms is on Capitol Hill. The radiant pink set against the ivory white Capitol Building on a sunny day is a stunning sight and a perfect backdrop to have a picnic.
We’ve gone through the worst weather of the year. Now it’s time to look forward to a couple weeks of lovely temps and even lovelier blossoms.
