Blow for Sweden as Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall will miss friendly fixture vs Luxembourg on Saturday night due to illness
Lucas Bergvall has been one of the rare bright spots for Tottenham Hotspur in an otherwise torrid campaign that currently sees them lying in the bottom half of the table.
Having officially arrived from Swedish minnows Djurgardens IF in July 2024, the teenager took some time to get used to the pace and physicality of Premier League football before now making himself undroppable from Ange Postecoglou’s first XI. The central midfielder has made 38 appearances across all competitions for Spurs, scoring a goal and supplying four assists.
Lucas Bergvall must have been keen to take his club form onto the Sweden national team after earning the call-up last week. But he will have to wait for a few days longer as the midfielder has been sidelined for Sweden’s game against Luxembourg on Saturday.
Tottenham fans might have been extremely concerned when they came across reports that the teenage prodigy did not train with the Sweden squad on Thursday. On Friday, Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson confirmed that that Bergvall will not be a part of the team travelling to Luxembourg because of illness, and will instead fly to Stockholm to rest and recuperate. He did not participate in team training as he didn’t feel well.
“We are one player short today, we will see how he feels tomorrow. He has a cold and is not in top form. Now he had to stay in bed, so we will see how he feels during the day,” Jon Dahl Tomasson told Swedish daily tabloid Aftonbladet about Bergvall.
“We will have to wait and see how the match goes on Saturday, we cannot decide that now. He could have maybe been a little bit involved today, but there is no reason to take any risks.”

Sweden have since confirmed via their official website that the Tottenham man will miss the game against Luxembourg with ‘cold symptoms’. Whether he will be able to participate against Northern Ireland in a friendly fixture next week is yet to be decided. Tomasson’s side will host Northern Ireland on Tuesday at Strawberry Arena in Solna, giving Bergvall a few days to recover from cold symptoms and join his side.
The last thing that Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham fans need right now is to hear about any injury concerns. Bergvall has grown into his role in his debut season at N17 and Postecoglou will definitely not want to lose him during the final stretch of games after the international break.

It has been that kind of a season for Ange and the Spurs supporters where things have just not worked out, especially due to an injury crisis. So, fingers crossed Bergvall fully recovers from his illness and manages to play some part against Northern Ireland next week before re-joining the Spurs squad for the important Premier League away trip to Chelsea on April 3.
