Inter Milan legend’s harsh verdict on Tottenham amid Atalanta’s title push
Tottenham have struggled to compete among Europe’s top teams this season, currently sitting 14th in the league and eliminated from all major competitions. With the Europa League as their only remaining shot at silverware, their poor form has frustrated fans and even drawn criticism from football legends, who have turned Spurs into a subject of ridicule.
Tottenham Hotspur’s 17-year trophy drought is the longest in the club’s history, leaving an entire generation of fans without the joy of seeing their team lift silverware. What makes it even more frustrating is how often Spurs have come close to winning major titles, only to fall short at the final hurdle… an unfortunate trend that has become almost comically predictable.
Inter Milan legend’s brutal dig at Tottenham
Fans from rival teams have long ridiculed Spurs for their persistent trophy drought, which, with the aid of social media, has led the club’s name to become synonymous with failure. The term ‘Spursy’ sums this up perfectly.
It describes Tottenham’s inability to hold things together in crucial situations, even if they seem to be in a position to clinch success. Inter Milan icon Beppe Bergomi has only added to this ridicule by claiming that, by definition, Tottenham are a club that simply does not win.
That echoes Giorgio Chiellini’s famous genuine statement which turned into a meme: “It’s just ze history of ze Tottenham.”
When Beppe and several writers were asked to make comparisons between Atalanta’s title challenge and Leicester’s remarkable Premier League title in the 2015/16 season, he quickly served up his first, honest response.
Bergomi speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, believes Atalanta have a harder path at winning the league than how Leicester did it
“The miracle is more difficult for Atalanta. Leicester was fighting with Tottenham, not a winning club by definition. Atalanta is fighting with Inter, who are among the top eight in Europe, and Napoli, who won the Scudetto two years ago.”
His statement might offend some fans, but it’s hard to argue against it. Tottenham simply haven’t proven themselves as a consistent top-six club. Even Newcastle managed to end their trophy drought, while the Lilywhites continue to struggle. It will take a massive effort… and perhaps even a major title… to silence the doubters.

The Spurs have the opportunity to silence Bergomi and all its critics by winning the Europa League this year. Lifting the trophy could would be a fitting response to the scepticism surrounding Ange Postecoglou and his approach. However, Tottenham first have to get by Eintracht Frankfurt, in a tough quarterfinal tie.. one made more difficult with the second leg being in Germany.
