Man United will not be moving to sign Anwar El Ghazi on a free transfer.
Earlier today, we covered a rumour suggesting that Manchester United were showing an interest in signing Anwar El Ghazi on a free transfer.
The Dutchman is currently a free agent, after his deal at PSV Eindhoven was terminated just last week.
With United now suddenly without Antony due to personal issues and Jadon Sancho currently not in favour after a very public dispute with Erik ten Hag, the Reds are low on numbers in the right-wing position. Hence, El Ghazi on a free could have made sense.
Well, the BBC have quashed those reports, claiming that United will ‘not be making a move’ to sign the 28-year-old who has two caps for the Netherlands.
The former Aston Villa and Everton man would have added some Premier League experience to the squad, though in terms of his overall quality, I’m not sure it’s of the required level.
El Ghazi would have blown hot and cold, much as he has done throughout his whole career, leaving fans frustrated more often than not. Plus, when the Antony and Sancho situations are (hopefully) resolved, the winger would find himself right back out of favour. At that point, he’d be costing United a weekly wage without anything to show for it.
The verdict
United would be smart to ensure they don’t get trigger happy here. In Facundo Pellistri, they have a player who has shown glimpses. I’d argue he’s already better than El Ghazi at this early stage of his career.
Bringing in El Ghazi would be a mistake in our opinion. He’s just not up to scratch and United should never settle for second best.
