Getafe are looking to sign Mason Greenwood permanently, as they look to persuade the player his future lies in Spain.
Manchester United’s summer was a weird one. Ownership talks hanging overhead. Off-field issues causing distractions. All while Erik ten Hag was trying to improve the playing squad.
Perhaps the most interesting development was the Mason Greenwood situation. At one stage, it looked like the club were getting set to re-integrate the Englishman back into the first-team fold. However, fans were not happy, meaning United had to complete a U-turn.
He’d head to Getafe on loan for the season. After a fairly slow start, he’s doing well by all accounts in Spain. Now, The Sun have provided an update on the Englishman’s future.
They state that Getafe have ‘turned on the charm’ to persuade Greenwood that his future lies in Spain.
He’s under contract at United until 2025, with the La Liga side ‘hoping to prise’ the 22-year-old United player away from Old Trafford on a permanent deal.
Getafe are trying to get United around the discussion table, so the can make an offer which would be ‘attractive’ to United, in order to get Greenwood off the wage bill.
It is stated that the ‘likelier’ option would see a loan move extended, as they know Greenwood is happy and rebuilding his life. At the time of their Greenwood announcement, they made it clear they’d do their utmost to ensure his mental well-being would be prioritised.
I’m firmly in the camp that United shouldn’t even consider a Greenwood return. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case right now, though we know how quickly things can change – particularly under the current regime. Who knows, Sir Jim Ratcliffe may want to sell him permanently as soon as he takes control of footballing operations, purely to get him off the books for good.
