Alejandro Garnacho has not been called up to the latest Argentina squad for their upcoming games.
Manchester United’s slow start to the season is starting to have a wider-reaching effect – and not for the better.
Players are underperforming, largely through no fault of their own. Injuries are decimating the squad, while club ownership issues are still causing major distractions.
As a result, Erik ten Hag is having to place more trust in his younger players. Alejandro Garnacho, albeit mega-talented, still falls into that bracket.
It’s easy to forget that Garnacho is still just a kid in footballing terms. This season, he’s been given more starts due to treatment table woes and Marcus Rashford’s poor form. Although it has been nice to see him given the chance, it does feel like it’s coming a little too quickly.
Now, as a result, the United starlet has been snubbed for international duty for the current two-week break. Argentina take on both Uruguay and Brazil in some important World Cup qualifiers, though Garnacho is not in the squad, according to the MEN.
Instead of Garnacho, Argentina boss Scaloni has opted for experience in the form of former Red Devil, Angel di Maria. The 35-year-old is having an excellent season with Benfica. He’ll join the likes of Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala in the attacking roles.
The United left-winger had been included in the last couple of Argentina squads and despite more starts recently, the impact hasn’t been there so far.
At this stage in his career, I still firmly believe Garnacho is better as a bench player, as he continues to hone his trade. It doesn’t help that he is playing in a side that is totally bereft of confidence at this moment in time.
Maybe in the long run this is better. It will be a wake-up call to Garnacho, who could look to kick it up another notch as a result of this snubbing.
