Man United have now accepted that they could lose Andre Onana to AFCON in January.
Manchester United Football Club made a major move in the goalkeeping department over the summer. David de Gea has been an absolute rock back there for many years, though his ability had been dwindling. He’s still without a team, which is absolutely crazy to me.
Andre Onana was brought in. The man from Cameroon is a huge personality, while he does feel like a direct upgrade on the aforementioned Spaniard. At the time of his signing, it was thought by Erik ten Hag that he had retired from international duty due to some disagreements with the powers-that-be. However, he recently conducted a U-turn and played during a recent international break.
With the African Cup of Nations just around the corner, ESPN have provided an update on Onana’s situation. According to their report, United are ‘resigned to losing’ their key player for up to a month due to those international commitments.
It’s stressed Onana is yet to make a final decision, though the United gaffer is ‘planning to be without’ Onana for the duration of the tournament, which begins on January 13th and runs until February 11th.
Onana could miss up to four Premier League games, depending on how far Cameroon make it.
During negotiations for his signature, United were told Onana was retired from international duty, though obviously, that situation has now changed, which is fair enough.
In terms of replacements, this is exactly why United signed Altay Bayindir. Sources have told ESPN that the Turkey international has ‘impressed’ staff in training since making the move to Old Trafford, though he’s yet to make his debut.
I’m super keen to see the 25-year-old in action.
Do you think Altay Bayindir will be trusted for that month? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
