Son Heung-min’s contract at Tottenham expires at the end of this season
Earlier this month, reports claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are planning to activate a one-year option in Son Heung-min’s contract.
As of now, the South Korean international’s contract at the Hotspur Way expires at the end of the season (Transfermarkt). However, once Spurs trigger the one-year option in his deal signed in 2021, it will keep the veteran forward with the club until the end of the 2025/26 season.
It had been speculated that Tottenham might offer Son Heung-min a fresh two-year contract. However, as per reports, this is not the case and the player’s camp have been unhappy with the club’s decision to perform a dramatic U-turn over handing fresh terms.
Given the forward’s contract situation at White Hart Lane, the cash-rich Saudi Pro League are planning to take advantage. They have made the 32-year-old one of their main transfer targets in 2025.
Ex-scout Bryan King feels Tottenham would be “foolish” not to offer Son a lucrative new contract. Having been one of the north London outfit’s excellent players in recent years, he thinks it is important they keep hold of the £190,000 per week ace.
“Son has been one of Spurs’ outstanding players in recent times, alongside Harry Kane,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“If the club don’t think he is worth a two-year contract, I think the board need to take a hard look at themselves. Tottenham would be foolish if they gave Son the chance to leave the club and join the Saudi Pro League.
“Even just having him at the club. He is a great help for younger players behind the scenes. He is a beacon to younger players, to see how important hard work and enthusiasm is.”
For almost a decade now, Son has been one of the leading faces at Tottenham. He has not only taken the captain’s armband but also become Spurs’ main man—both on and off the pitch—following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich in 2023.
So, the least Spurs could do is hand the long-serving South Asian a two-year contract. Triggering a one-year option in his contract would see him tied to our club until 2026. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean Son will remain at the Hotspur Way beyond next summer.
The idea to trigger an extension would lie in maintaining his value and not allowing him to leave on a free transfer at the end of the campaign. If Saudi Pro League clubs intensify their interest and our captain pushes for an exit, the Lilywhites would be able to secure a fee if the extension is activated in his current deal.
