How anyone is still beating the drum for former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham is a mystery to me.
The former “Special One” is still being championed by former players and a small group of Hammers fans who clearly believe that anyone is better than our current head coach.
Personally, I think Lopetegui’s time is up at West Ham, with tough fixtures against Newcastle and Arsenal up next, which could drop the Irons further down the Premier League table.
However, that doesn’t mean I’d choose to replace the 58-year-old Spaniard with Mourinho, who is reverting to type in Turkey. In short, Jose wants to leave Fenerbahce, who are understandably holding him to his contract. This has prompted the Portuguese coach to start insulting Turkish football in press conferences in an effort to get the sack.
Mourinho’s admirers are clearly impressed by his cheeky nature and personality, but the truth is that while Jose can be charming, he can also be toxic.
West Ham needs a forward-thinking coach who can play entertaining football in an ever-evolving landscape where our current coach appears to be struggling. Mourinho used to be a winner, but that was a long time ago, and football trends change as new coaches and ideas emerge.
Ironically, it may not be the 61-year-old’s anti-Turkish football rant that gets him booted out of Fenerbahce. It’s just as likely to be the fact that his team are five points behind Galatasaray in a title race he was brought in to win.
