Tottenham Hotspur defender Radu Dragusin has been looking to move away from White Hart Lane in the 2025 transfer intervals with lack of opportunities coming his way, and multiple Italian clubs have taken notice of his situation and are looking to take advantage of it going into the upcoming winter transfer window.
The Romanian international has also been linked with a potential swap deal as Daniel Levy looks to use the 22-year-old as a makeweight in a player-plus-cash deal for Yann Bisseck. The interests from the San Siro side come on top of those from their League rivals Juventus and Napoli.
Spurs to block Dragusin exit amidst Italian interest
Ange Postecoglou has been using the former Genoa defender off late as the injury to Micky van de Ven has been an inroad to giving Dragusin more playing time and proving his highly acclaimed credentials. And owing to the importance of the 22-year-old as the only senior qualitative backup at N17, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson doesn’t believe that the club would let go of the player’s services in the January transfer window.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Robinson insists that letting the Romanian leave in the winter would be a big mistake. He said:
“They can’t afford to let him go, it’s as simple as that. Spurs have got Romero and van de Ven, who looking at their injury records, neither of them rarely complete a full season.
“With the rigours of European football as well, that is an area where Spurs will recruit in January rather than let a player like Dragusin go. He still hasn’t been given much of an opportunity with a run of games.
“We saw in the Euros that he is a quality player. There’s absolutely no way that Spurs will deal for Dragusin in January, and will likely get another player in instead.”
Make an exit make sense…
Ange Postecoglou has been screaming for more depth in the centre-back position, and if the North Londoners were to let go of Radu considering how thin the options are at CB, it would be a very unpopular decision among Spurs supporters.
While Radu Dragusin may not be a regular starter at White Hart Lane, he has proven to be a reliable option off late, especially with Micky van de Ven’s injury, and if Spurs were to let him go in the upcoming January window, Daniel Levy would be leaving the Australian head coach’s roster quite exposed in a key area of the pitch.
Moreover, it wouldn’t look like Postecoglou would entertain any possible call to sanction that kind of move, particularly given how public he has been about the need for more defensive depth.
And with the club already lacking in experienced cover at centre-back at the moment, allowing Dragusin to leave could backfire in a big way.
Should Ange stop being stubborn?
We have seen that Radu Dragusin has massive capabilities, however, his attributes don’t exactly align with playing a high line of defence that Postecoglou has preferred to play (and has been highly criticised for).
The Romanian likes to position himself in a manner where he can read and impact the game, however his comforts don’t really lie in stepping up to defend and then being exposed to a situation where he has to quickly recover ground against pacey attackers — something basic tthat the high defensive line demands.
If the Australian head coach were to slightly tweak his approach or were to change his formation, it could open up more opportunities for Dragusin to play a more central role without being exposed in situations that doesn’t suit him.
For instance, a shift to a more conservative 4-2-3-1 where a holding mid is always protecting the front of defensive line could help the Romanian, going to exteme measures, a switch to back three could help accommodate Dragusin’s style of play with Ange’s, however, that being said Postecoglou has been quite stubborn in his tactical approach and philosophy since arriving at Spurs, so he isn’t surely going to do that.
