The grieving son of a West Ham fan who tragically died during the recent match against Wolves is offering a £2,500 reward for the safe return of his late father’s treasured Rolex watch.
Kevin Gray, 61, from Suffolk, collapsed and died while watching The Hammers play on 9 December in London.
His son, Jamie Gray, 31, discovered the cherished watch — a 40th birthday gift from Kevin’s friends — was missing when the family inquired about his belongings after the incident.
Jamie said: “We’re offering a reward for its return, no questions asked. We just want it back.
“Dad was the kindest man you could meet, always helping others. He started taking me to West Ham games when I was just five. The watch isn’t about the money; it’s a keepsake we want to pass down through the family.”
Offers to raise money for a replacement have been declined by the family, who say the sentimental value of the original watch cannot be replaced.
A London Stadium spokesperson expressed condolences and confirmed an investigation into CCTV footage from the match is underway.
Claret & Hugh Says:
I’m so gobsmacked by this story that initially, I didn’t believe it. The very thought that somebody could rob a deceased person of their treasured possessions while his shocked family were coming to terms with his death is unfathomable.
Kevin’s family must be in a terrible state. Nobody ever goes to a football match expecting not to return, but to have a theft added to their grief is horrific.
The Gray family have said they hope it was just an innocent accident and perhaps the watch fell off. If that is the case and someone opportunistically picked it up, then let’s hope they do the decent thing and return it.
The incident has been reported to the Met Police, who are making inquiries. One can only hope for the family’s peace of mind that the LS CCTV is up to scratch and can shed some light on what happened here. Quite frankly, this is the last thing the family needs after losing Kevin so close to Christmas.
