There has been “no approach” from Manchester City for ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
It was reported last month that the Premier League champions had “sounded out” the France international about making a move to the Etihad in the New Year.
However, writing in his column for GiveMeSport, Romano said that Pep Guardiola’s side “never really considered bringing in” Pogba.
They had contemplated signing him when he initially left United in the summer of 2022 but they have not looked at reviving their interest.
Will City sign players in January?
While it doesn’t appear as if Pogba will be a target, the Cityzens are gearing themselves up for a busy transfer window. Guardiola has confirmed that the club are planning to strengthen their squad.
There could be reinforcements brought in for several different positions. A midfielder is expected to be the top priority, although moves for the likes of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes have already been ruled out by reliable sources.
A backup option for Erling Haaland will also need to be looked at. The Norwegian international has managed to keep himself fit so far this season but, if he is sidelined for any length of time, the Cityzens would struggle to score goals.
What does the future hold for Pogba?
The 31-year-old is currently serving an 18-month ban after failing a drugs test. He is now allowed to start training again with a club of his choice but he cannot play competitively until his suspension ends in March.
A return to Old Trafford has also been mooted, but Romano has also played down those reports. So far, it is believed Pogba has received approaches from clubs in the United States and Brazil.
