West Ham United lost 4-1 to Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.
And one West Ham player in particular really let himself, and his club, down.
Julen Lopetegui will be sweating regarding the security of his job right now, and rightly so – he has performed terribly in his role as Hammers head coach.
Interestingly, David Moyes was spotted in the stands at The Etihad during our 4-1 defeat, and Lopetegui would have been well aware of the Scot’s presence.
I personally believe that Lopetegui needs to be sacked, not that I want Moyes to replace him mind you!
In spite of the criticism Lopetegui is receiving, his players have let him down badly this season.
And one player’s performance at The Etihad on Saturday summed up our season so far.
BBC journo rips into West Ham man after vs Manchester City loss
The Hammers actually looked decent at times going forward.
However, we were completely toothless in front of goal, as per usual.
Our defensive performance was horrendous once again as well, and most of our troubles were down to one man in particular.
BBC’s chief football reporter Simon Stone absolutely ripped into Alphonse Areola after our defeat to Man City, and rightly so.
Stone said, “Lopetegui wouldn’t need to be to know even an off-form City did not need presents.“
“Yet that is exactly what keeper Areola gave them in the final minute of what had been an encouraging opening period to effectively kill the visitors’ hopes of getting anything out of the contest.“
“Savinho’s left-wing cross was excellent, but it was obvious it was going to the far post. Inexplicably, Areola, in a central position, started to come for it even though there was no chance of him getting there.“
“The former PSG man, 31, checked himself after a couple of strides but by then it was too late. Haaland had an open goal to head into.“
Stone is spot on there.
Areola has been horrendous this season, and his performance for West Ham against Manchester City on Saturday was inexplicably bad.
Quite what he was thinking for Man City’s second goal is anyone’s guess. I feel like he attempted to dive far too early for their first goal as well.
