No Jamal Musiala, no problem.
Bayern Munich started off 2025 with a 1-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach thanks to a second half penalty conversion from Harry Kane but, with the total amount of chances they had, the Rekordmeister well and truly still should have scored more than just once. Die Fohlen did have a few credible chances of their own, but Vincent Kompany’s side was in control for the majority of proceedings.
Despite Musiala not even being in the match day squad due to recovering from an illness, he was the subject of questions after the Bayern win with regards to his ongoing contract extensions. Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich are also in the midst of new contract extension negotiations behind the scenes as all of their contracts are currently set to expire in June. However, the club has maintained their confidence in feeling that all three players will agree to new deals, it is just a matter of getting all of the details hashed out and fine-tuned.
Board member for sport Max Eberl was asked about the Musiala situation after the win over the club where he was previously the sporting director. “From the outside you think things are stalling, but inside we are continuing to work calmly. And at some point, there will be a surprise,” he boldly stated when he was asked where things currently stand with the player on ZDF’s Sportstudio (via @iMiaSanMia).
In recent weeks, it has been reported that Musiala’s camp has been trying to work in a release clause in his new contract, which has created the perception that there are some tricky hurdles standing in the way from him putting pen to paper. Eberl did not want to get baited into discussing specific details of the negotiations, but he was sure to mention that talks are going in the right direction.
“I will not comment on any of the contract details. Whatever is speculated and said from outside, we have to deal with that. Internally, we are so strong and stand together so strongly, and the talks about contract extensions are good talks, completely transparent, completely open. I cannot say in which direction the decisions will be made. The talks are on a really good basis. That’s what matters,” Eberl explained.
Eberl is also remaining calm with what appears to be a deadline for a decision that seems to have already been made between the club and Musiala’s camp. “We also said that we’re in agreement a decision has to be made at some point before ‘crunch time’ of the season. Until then, I can say that we’re very, very relaxed. Everyone has their position. And we’ll ignore what comes from outside,” he stated.
Previous reports have suggested that an agreement is said to be met by the beginning of next month, so we will probably know what is going to happen by the time February rolls around.
