Ben Jacobs backs Tottenham to enter the fray for Viktor Gyokeres in the summer
Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of work to do in the January transfer window in the wake of their disappointing North London derby defeat.
Spurs now sit 14th in the Premier League table and are without a win in the competition since beating Southampton 5-0 in mid-December. Fans are not happy with the performances on display at the moment. One of the mitigating factors behind the North Londoners’ dismal season is the injury situation, and while Ange Postecoglou does have the defence of that, it is still inexcusable to be only eight points above the drop zone.
With the January transfer window ongoing, Tottenham have the opportunity to make signings in order to strengthen their ranks. They must accelerate their transfer business after bringing in goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague at the start of the month.
In terms of attacking reinforcements, Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani was the club’s top target. However, he is set to sign for Juventus on loan for the remainder of the season. The Hotspur Way chiefs are now assessing their striker options and one of the hottest commodities they could enter the conversation for—more likely in the summer—is Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.
GIVEMESPORT journalist Ben Jacobs has dropped an update on Spurs keeping tabs on Viktor Gyokeres. The North London outfit’s interest in the Sporting CP marksman stems from their failure to sign Kolo Muani on loan. As such, the club’s attention has turned elsewhere, with the Swedish international emerging as one of the targets.

Ben Jacobs feels Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou must quickly decide whether they have enough firepower in their attack now to sustain the demands for the rest of the season, and if that’s the case, the club can abandon the pursuit of a striker now and push it for their summer plans instead.
“Tottenham are now in a position where they’re going to have to work out, ‘have we got enough goals in us’, especially knowing they added Dominic Solanke over the summer, or do they need to move now?” Jacobs said on GIVEMESPORT’s latest Market Madness podcast.
“It was just a market opportunity for [Randal] Kolo Muani to minimum get them until the end of the season. But Daniel Levy doesn’t tend to panic buy, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Tottenham can’t get the right name in.
“If they wait I would keep an eye on Liam Delap for Chelsea and Spurs. I also think Tottenham could enter the conversation for [Viktor] Gyokeres and [Jonathan] David is a really interesting one for Tottenham, for West Ham, for Newcastle, and several others, because he is a free agent, so he’s going to be one of the bargains of the summer, presuming nobody tries their luck in January.”
Viktor Gyokeres, who has already been linked with a move to Spurs since last year, is the biggest name of the aforementioned trio and rightly so. He has caught the attention of clubs all over Europe due to his incredible goalscoring numbers for Sporting CP across two seasons.
Having joined Sporting from Coventry City a few years ago, the Swede has become a star in the Liga NOS, bagging 75 goals and 21 assists in just 80 appearances. As he is highly sought-after in the continent, Spurs would need to do something special to fend off competition from some biggest clubs and lure Gyokeres to North London.

All in all, the 26-year-old would represent the best coup of any mentioned player, due to his experience and output for Sporting over the last couple of seasons. Nonetheless, fresh attacking players are needed for an impetus in Tottenham’s squad, making it risky for Big Ange to avoid doing business now and wait until the summer for Gyokeres.

That being said, Spurs must make a firm decision over whether or not to reinforce their attacking unit in this transfer window.
