With numerous names being mentioned and the club working diligently to get some transfer deals over the line, a potential alternative to Ezechiel Banzuzi has emerged: To recap, West Ham made a take it or leave it bid two weeks ago which was significantly below OH Leuven’s £12m valuation and swiftly rejected. Discussions with the player’s agents are still ongoing, but a new name has now come into the picture.
Portugese prospect, Dario Essugo, aged 19, currently on loan at UD Las Palmas from Sporting CP has piqued West Ham’s interest. Any transfer would have to be a permanent deal, given the player is mid-way through a loan deal. Other clubs have also been linked, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Leeds.
The combative midfield player has previously spent time on loan at G.D. Chaves where he made 14 appearances.
He was the youngest ever debutant for Sporting CP at the age of 16 years and 6 days in March 2021, and in December of the same year, he became Portugals youngest player to appear in a UEFA Champions League match. Having represented Portugal at various youth levels he has earned 7 Under-21 caps.
Standing at 5ft 10” the right footed defensive midfielder is known for his ability to anchor the midfield in deep central positions, but his versatility allows him to play further forward as well.
Claret and Hugh will keep you posted should there be any developments on this story.
