West Ham threaten Tottenham’s move for Leicester City star Harvey Barnes
West Ham United are believed to be in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur target Harvey Barnes from Leicester City.
This is according to the Guardian, who claim that the English winger is also on the radars of Aston Villa and Newcastle United. Spurs recently sealed the signing of James Maddison.
The Foxes were relegated to the Championship last month and it was inevitable that their best players will leave one by one. After Maddison, it could be Barnes’ turn.
One doesn’t need to list why the Premier League is a better, more lucrative league than the Championship. Moreover, playing for Tottenham would give Barnes extra exposure in a bid to make England’s senior team under Gareth Southgate.
Barnes to Spurs?
West Ham, meanwhile, were underwhelming in the Premier League last season even though they did secure UEFA Europa League qualification by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Spurs made an awkward £50million bid to sign both Barnes and Maddison together earlier this month. It was obviously rejected. Given we signed Maddison for a fee of around £40million, Barnes would also cost us a pretty penny.
Barnes, 25, has two years left on his contract (Transfermarkt). The pacey winger has interest from other teams, is a homegrown player and has time left on his deal at the King Power Stadium.
All these factors can raise his price tag. Do Spurs need him? Yes. We need quality wingers who can compete with Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min.

Richarlison plays more centrally and doesn’t boast the pace or agility Barnes does. Moreover, after Lucas Moura’s exit, a move for the Leicester man makes even more sense.
