Manchester City have tabled a bid for RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dani Olmo, according to Foot Mercato reporter Santi Aouna.
The journalist (who has a very mixed track record when it comes to reliability) says that both the Premier League champions and Barcelona have “already made an offer” for the Spanish international (who is currently holding talks with Leipzig about his future).
Olmo has been heavily linked with a transfer to the Etihad in the German press over the past couple of months, but sources in the UK have consistently said that he isn’t a target for the Cityzens.
Whether that has changed now that Julian Alvarez has been sold to Atletico Madrid, we shall have to wait and see.
How much is Olmo likely to cost?
The 26-year-old did have a €6om (£51.6m) release clause in his contract but that expired at the end of the European Championships last month. Even so, it has been reported that Leipzig are still open to selling him for a similar fee.
Barcelona have had bids rejected for Olmo already. The La Liga club included add-ons that were deemed unachievable by Leipzig and they have held subsequent negotiations in order to find an agreement that will satisfy all parties.
City don’t need another playmaker
With Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne both set to stay with City this summer, it’s hard to see where Olmo would fit into the starting lineup.
There is an argument to say that he could fill Alvarez’s role in the squad, with the Argentinian having played as both a No.10 and out wide (on occasion) last season.
However, you’d think that City would seek out a replacement who is more of an out-and-out forward instead, with the main priority being to provide direct competition for Erling Haaland.
