There were rumblings about Joshua Kimmich being captain of the German national football team for a while now. His Bayern Munich teammate Manuel Neuer was captain for seven years before his retirement a couple weeks ago, so the stars are lining up for the 29-year-old Kimmich to be the next one in line.
When Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was asked about it, he could only put in a word as he believes his opinion won’t hold weight among the DFB higher-ups. “I have respect for my coaching colleagues with the German national team”, Kompany quipped (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “It’s a process going on with the national team. My opinion here isn’t important. Joshua is a leader with us. He’s helped me a lot here.”
Those early comparisons to Philipp Lahm, a German great and leader, might have its full circle moment if all goes well.
