German goalkeeper Alexander Nübel’s tenure at Bayern Munich has been a strange one — namely in that it has not really even begun.
Since signing from then-Bundesliga club Schalke 04 on a free ahead of the 2020/21 season, Nübel has waited his turn behind veteran Manuel Neuer and gone on a succession of loan tours elsewhere. That’s a long time for someone apparently anointed the heir apparent.
But despite occasional friction, Bayern and Nübel have found a way to make the arrangement work, including even a five-year contract extension this past spring after at one point seemingly wanting out of Munich.
According to reporting from Sport Bild, the terms of the new deal aren’t half bad — for Bayern or for Nübel’s loan club, VfB Stuttgart. Via @iMiaSanMia:
Alexander Nübel’s Bayern salary is worth around €10m gross per year. Bayern are currently covering around two thirds of his salary while he’s on loan at Stuttgart. VfB are paying him €3.5m per year. Nübel remains under contract at FC Bayern through 2029, while Neuer’s runs through this season only — though talks for a renewal are expected in the spring.
How long can the current arrangement last? And will the Bavarians’ vaunted goalkeeper-in-waiting ever suit up for Bayern?
