According to reports, the Premier League is considering shifting the deadline of the summer transfer window to a much earlier date – August 15th, instead of the regular August 30th.
Starting from 2025, the transfer window could potentially close a full 15 days earlier than it normally would, and has been. The aim is to close the window before the first games of the Premier League, which would make sense, because it would imply that clubs would not be able to make changes to their squads after the first games. However, the proposed change in deadline could also create a lack of competition towards the beginning of the season.
The same idea was proposed and implemented back in 2018, but was very quickly binned, owing to English clubs feeling ‘vulnerable’ to last-minute attempts from other European clubs to buy their players. However, this time, the expectation is that all other European leagues will follow their example and also change their summer deadline. Unlike 2018, though, Saudi Arabia is now a major player in football transfer decisions. But this idea is not likely to be followed in the Middle Eastern country, considering that their transfer deadline is already after European deadlines.
