Bayern Munich’s highly anticipated clash with Bayer Leverkusen was a heated affair, with both sides constantly getting annoyed at each other during the heat of the moment. Sven Ulreich possibly took it a step too far, though. There seems to be a video circulating of Sven Ulreich insulting Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes by saying ‘Sit down Rolfes, you wan**r’.
Bayern have subsequently responded to this and @iMiaSanMia captured the statement:
Bayern says Ulreich said that in the heat of the moment. He’s aware that the choice of words was inappropriate and apologizes for it.
Of course, this incident somewhat mirrors Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro’s derogatory remarks about Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl and the subsequent reaction from Rolfes was not much different from the one Bayern had, as captured again by @iMiaSanMia: “I neither heard nor noticed it. Everyone is responsible for the level of their words.”
But it may not remain on the level of a small spat. As captured yet again by @iMiaSanMia, It seems the DFB might also be interested in the incident:
Following Sven Ulreich’s insult towards Simon Rolfes on Saturday, the DFB’s control committee is ‘aware of the incident’ and is reviewing it. But it’s not yet clear whether an official investigation will be launched. There’s no official statement from the DFB yet
The punishments could range from a fine to a ban, so this is a situation to keep an eye on. Of course, it is unlikely that a ban would really affect Bayern that much unless Manuel Neuer was to get an injury, but at least Daniel Peretz might make it onto the bench again…
