German paper Bild are today going strong on the story that Chelsea are interested in Borussia Dortmund player Jamie Gittens.
The attacker (formerly Jamie Bynoe-Gittens) is apparently being watched by scouts from all over Europe as he becomes the latest young talent to head to Dortmund to make his senior breakthrough. Chelsea added a lot of players this summer, and have a huge queue of youngsters looking for first team minutes at the moment. But Gittens looks an exceptional talent and could certainly tempt them to open their chequebook again.
“Electric, the speed he has, the movement of the hips, as a defender it is your worst nightmare,” former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock said on BBC Champions League Match of the Day earlier this season after Gittens scored two against Club Brugge.
“You can’t get anywhere near him, such is the speed of feet.”
Chelsea have almost too many talents to deal with
Bild claim that the Blues, along with a host of other top teams like Liverpool and Tottenham, are plotting to bring the former Cobham academy player back to West London. It won’t be easy, given the competition, but Dortmund are aways willing to do business at the right price.
The question is how on earth Chelsea fit their current crop of attackers (already doing well this season) with next summer’s arrivals of Kendry Paez and Estevao Willian. Adding Gittens to that would seem like overkill. But if a talent is good enough, these sporting directors have already shown they’re willing to sign them and worry about the rest later.
Much like Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham before him, we expect a major saga of interested teams to pursue Gittens from now on, with a major move eventually happening next summer or perhaps the year after that.
