Eric Dier’s time at Bayern Munich has certainly been a rollercoaster. He was put under intense scrutiny from the minute he arrived and initially fulfilled the role of backup CB, only for him to start to gain erstwhile Bayern head coach Thomas Tuchel and bizzarely become the Bavarian giants’ most important defender as the club faced Arsenal FC and Real Madrid, reaching the Champions League semifinals with Dier, someone who Tottenham Hotspur had more or less banished from the squad, at heart of it all.
Under new head coach Vincent Kompany, however, his game time has fallen off a cliff again and, according to the frustratingly inconsistent news outlet BILD, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, he may be offloaded upon the end of this season:
Eric Dier is likely to leave Bayern when his contract expires next summer. After having played an important role last season, he hardly plays a role under Vincent Kompany. The Englishman is not particularly well suited to the current system due to his lack of speed.
On one hand, Dier has, indeed, struggled for game time even as regulars Kim Minjae and Dayot Upamecano have come under serious scrutiny. On the other hand, finding a center back willing to be fourth in the pecking order is always difficult. Will Bayern struggle to find someone with the requisite quality again?
