To fully grasp Tottenham’s trajectory in recent years, it’s clear that the Lilywhites have taken a step backward. This season, they are set to finish well outside the top six, hitting new lows as they sit in 13th place. The club’s struggles under Ange Postecoglou have left many fans questioning just how poorly the team is performing and what alternative choices could have been made. Jermain Defoe has now revealed which manager some Tottenham coaches wanted the club to appoint before Postecoglou’s arrival in 2023.
Thomas Tuchel has named his first England squad as he prepares to kick off his tenure as Three Lions boss with World Cup qualifier victories against Albania and Latvia. James Maddison and Djed Spence missed out on selection, while Dominic Solanke remains Harry Kane’s backup in the national team setup.
Interestingly, in a different scenario, Tuchel might have been managing those very players at Tottenham, as reports suggest the German coach was once considered for the Spurs job.
Defoe believes Tuchel would have been the perfect fit for Tottenham
Postecoglou’s achievements include the AFC Asian Cup and Scottish Premiership, but Tuchel stands apart for his European accomplishments: winning the Champions League, Club World Cup, and Super Cup. European success is always more highlighted than success on Asian grounds.
At the same time, former Chelsea boss Jermain Defoe has revealed that Tottenham coaches have been talking about him as a potential replacement for Antonio Conte. As an academy coach at Hotspur Way at the time, Defoe recalls the excitement among the ranks over the chances of working with the German.
The Spurs legend speaking on TalkSport, wanted Tuchel as the Boss
“I was in the Tottenham academy coaching for two years. Before Ange got the job, I had a conversation with some of the coaches.
“We were actually saying, ‘Cor, if we got Thomas Tuchel here’. Because we’d heard in terms of his detail and his coaching, even speaking to Harry (Kane), his sessions and the detail that he gives the players and the energy and what he brings to the job, he said it’s unbelievable. That’s what they say.”
Debates have surfaced in recent months about whether England should have appointed a homegrown coach instead of looking abroad.
However, Defoe insists that the priority should be hiring the best candidate, and he believes the FA has found the right man in Tuchel to guide the team to silverware.

Ange is treading on thin ice, with Bergvall’s heroics in the second leg against AZ Alkmaar keeping him in the job for now. With their season hanging in the balance, Tottenham must go all out to secure the only silverware still within reach—the Europa League.
