Man United are looking to sign centre-back Goncalo Inacio in the January transfer window.
Defensively, Manchester United are in a weird place right now. The club have some excellent players on their books, namely Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. However, there’s a lack of depth there, while injuries are also playing their part.
It makes sense then, to hear that United are scouring the market for a new signing in that area. Harry Maguire is hardly flavour of the month, while Jonny Evans was brought in to be nothing but a stop-gap in case of major injury crisis.
It’s The Sun with the story. They link United with Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio. According to the claim, United are ‘gearing up’ for a January move to sign the 22-year-old central defender.
SunSport understands that a scout has been sent to Lisbon to ‘closely monitor’ the player over the next couple of months, before the Reds potentially make a move to acquire the defender. Apparently, United have ordered their scout to watch the Portugal international three times per month.
United are prepared to match a £52m release clause that’s in his current contract, with Inacio recently signing that new deal.
The verdict
United have always done pretty well when it comes to acquiring players from Portugal, namely Sporting CP. You look at Cristiano Ronaldo as the main player bought from there, though the likes of Nani and Bruno Fernandes have also had great success.
It seems like the Portuguese game translates well to the Premier League, thus I wouldn’t mind it if this move does happen. United need extra help in that area of the field and Inacio would certainly allow us to get younger (and stronger) at that position.
